Following a vegan diet means checking more than the name on the front of a supplement. The enzyme, other ingredients and capsule shell all matter, and different products within the same range may have different sources.

Check the whole formulation
“Digestive enzyme” describes a function, rather than where an ingredient comes from. An enzyme may be obtained from different sources, so the word itself does not confirm that a product is vegan. The same applies to the capsule: its material needs to be considered separately from what is inside it.
Intoleran’s original explanation used a lactase capsule as an example of a short ingredient list: lactase, calcium carbonate and a capsule made from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, often shortened to HPMC. This helps illustrate why reading the complete list is useful. It should not be taken as the formulation of every lactase product or pack currently available.
Vegetarian and vegan are different descriptions
A vegetarian product is not necessarily suitable for a vegan diet. The original range information identified Once a Day as vegetarian rather than vegan, and listed DAO Plus and DAO Mini as exceptions to the vegan range. Because formulations and ranges can change, confirm the current Australian product information before ordering rather than extending an old statement to every product on the shelf.
Check the Once a Day product page and the ingredient information for the exact DAO product you are considering. If the source of an ingredient is not clear, our Australian team can help locate the current manufacturer information.
Choose for the food component involved
Whether a supplement suits a vegan diet is a separate question from whether it is relevant to your symptoms. Lactase acts on lactose, the sugar in dairy milk. Someone avoiding dairy may therefore have little reason to choose a lactase product for their usual meals.
Plant-based meals can contain other carbohydrates, including those found in legumes, grains, fruit and vegetables. That does not mean every plant-based meal requires an enzyme. Start with the particular food component and your individual needs, then check whether a product is intended for that purpose.
Manufacturing information is helpful, but does not replace the label
Intoleran develops its products in the Netherlands and has described its approach as using ingredients needed for the formulation. The original 2022 article also discussed European ingredient sourcing. Those background details do not, by themselves, establish the vegan status of an individual supplement. The current formulation remains the deciding information.
A short checklist before buying
- Identify the full product name, strength and pack size.
- Read the active ingredients and the other ingredients, including the capsule shell.
- Look for an explicit vegan statement and ask about any unclear ingredient sources.
- Check that the product’s intended use matches the food component you need help with.
